The Pygmy Forest on the Mendocino coast is being celebrated this year by a number of local organizations and state agencies. There will be talks, guided hikes, ceremonies, contests and exhibits throughout the Mendocino-Fort Bragg area starting in April with all area fourth graders taking a field trip to the pygmy forest Reserve and National Natural Landmark.

Self-guided walk on the Van Damme State Park Discovery Trail & Boardwalk (All Access)
From Highway 1: 3 miles east on Little River Airport Road, left at "Pygmy Forest" sign.
This boardwalk provides the only wheelchair access to the pygmy forest.

Self Guided Hike Up the Ecological Staircase
This four hour hike takes you from the coastal headlands up the first three terraces of the world famous Ecological Staircase through the second terrace spruce and redwood forest to the pygmy forest on the 300,000 year old third terrace. Pick up a free tour guide at the interperative sign near the parking lot to read about the flora at each of the numbered signs along the trail. Moderate difficulty, bring snack and water.
